What group was responsible for paying for taxes in France

The Third Estate is your answer.

The Third Estate was the largest group (made up of commoners), and bore most of the taxes created by the French governments. The First Estate (Nobles), generally paid less to none, and the Clergy (Second Class) was completely exempted from taxes.
