Let X = the smaller number

The larger number would be X+1

So you have:

x + x +1 = 41

Simplify:

2x +1 = 41

Subtract 1 from each side:

2x = 40

Divide both sides by 2:

x = 40/2

x = 20

Smaller number = x = 20

Larger number = x +1 = 20 +1 = 21
