Abraham was residing in the city of Ur in Mesopotamia, who, led by God's voice, left and settled in the parts of the Canaan land. He also stayed in Egypt for a while, in order to return to Canaan again. At that time, Abraham lived in Canaan as a nomad with his family and servants, without their own state i.e. the promised land. His son, Isaac, had two sons, Esau and Jacob, of whom Jacob was called Israel, a later name for the Jewish nation and country. Jacob had twelve sons, from whom later would become twelve tribes of Israel. The twelve Jacob's sons moved to Egypt, and they settled there, whose descendants lived there for centuries. Some of their descendants were Pharaohs, and one of the famous heirs was the Egyptian prince known as Moses. He will later bring Israelites out of Egypt and lead them to the 40 year journey to the promised land, that is, Canaan.
