At the end of this fantasy story, the boy of Indonesian ancestry turns his back on the good fight and returns to his family to get money to feed them and keep the lights on until the last darkness descends. All are condemned. It is based on the ancient Nordic theme of a courageous struggle against an inevitable fate.
