Medgar Evers, a 1954 graduate of Alcorn State University, was assassinated outside of his home in Jackson, Mississippi in 1963.

The integration of schools in the South after the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling resulted in violence and tension between blacks and white southerners. Many southerners did not want integration, as they felt forced integration was an overreach by the federal government. Along with this, they liked their social norms and status as having more rights than African American citizens. This is why anyone who tried to change Southern culture resulted in violence or tension.
