The majority of the Chinese immigrants at the 1800´s where from southern China. Civil war and famine impulsed them to migrate to the US, as soon as they heard they had big opportunities to work looking for gold and send money to their families back home. In steamships, they arrived in San Francisco's harbor, where the first Chinatown was founded.
