How did Spain gain great riches from its colonies?

Answer: At the beginning of the Spanish colonial period, the economy was based on exploitation, both of land and of Native Americans. During the first Spanish settlements, the system of encomienda was established, by which Spaniards were given title to American territory and ownership of the villages that they built there.
