For the basics, I think a simple story's end could use a lesson/moral. Most poems or children's stories have a thing to teach them which always comes clear near the end. There could be sometimes where it even says it directly.

Otherwise, for a more complex novel or narrative there could be a use of foreshadowing if a sequel comes to this story. However if there is no sequel to this story the author would nail it to the ground that the story is over.

The most common of all I think to tell that a story hasn't fully ended is foreshadowing, to give a hint of what is to come.
