Because by separate secession the state relinquishes all its rights within the government; it surrenders its equal rights to the common territories, to the vast public domain of the United States and the public property of every kind belonging to the nation. And for this reason I oppose secession as being emphatically submission.

–“A Protest against the Ordinance of Secession,”
James G. Taliaferro

Why does Taliaferro equate secession with submission?

Louisiana would lose its public domain lands to the United States.
Louisiana would be forced to surrender its property rights to the United States.
Louisiana would appear weak to the United States.
Louisiana would lose rights in government and rights to US public property.
