Why did mckinley NOT want to go to war with Spain?

They didn't desire a war with Kingdom of Spain as a result of they feared that the destabilizing effects of a war would possibly hurt the United States of America economy. McKinley knew that if he refused to send out the troops once Congress declared war, the Democrats would use this truth to destroy him within the 1900 election.
