A car park has no parking spaces on the first floor. The second floor has double the amount of spaces on the first floor. The third floor has 3 more spaces than the second. The total number of spaces is 428. Use an algebraic method to work out the number of parking spaces on the first floor.

Answer:

85 parking spaces

Explanation:

Given that :

Parking spaces on floors :

Let first floor = x

Second floor = 2x

Third floor = 2x + 3

Total parking spaces = 428

THEREFORE ;

x + 2x + 2x + 3 = 428

5x + 3 = 428

5x = 428 - 3

5x = 425

x = 425 / 5

x = 85

Hence, there are 85 parking spaces on the first floor
