There are four distinct geographical regions within the country: the Venezuelan Highlands, the Maracaibo lowlands, the Orinoco plains and the Guiana region. The Venezuelan Highlands are mountains that border the Caribbean Sea. This range is the northeastern most extension of the Andes Mountain chain.
